A History of Colony’s Quality Meats Inc.

Colony Market the predecessor to Colony’s Quality Meats was founded by H. Frank Smith in 1962 as a small service oriented retail meat market. Larry R. Smith, Frank’s son partnered with Frank in 1970. In 1976 after taking over daily operations of Colony Market, Larry began what would be the first expansion into a full scale, full service conventional supermarket. With Frank retiring in 1986, Larry began planning for the second major expansion, continuing to provide the excellent quality service Colony was known for. By 1988 Colony Market stood at nearly 20,000 square feet and employed over 65 associates. Larry continued daily operations through the nineties stressing the importance of providing the very highest quality products while offering superior personal service. As the community of Grand Blanc grew so did the business. By the early 2000’s Colony had regular employment of 80 associates and seasonal employment of over 90 associates, catering to an upper middle class community.


In 2001 upon graduation from Michigan State University, Larry’s oldest son, Frank’s grandson, Scott R. Smith joined the family business. In early 2005 Larry was approached by the Trillium Development Company interested in purchasing Colony Market’s property, along with adjoining properties that Larry owned. Colony Market would ultimately be liquidated and closed on April 1st 2006. Larry and Scott are still proud that the year prior to the closing, Colony Market financially recorded its most successful year in company history. At a time when many supermarkets were closing out of necessity Colony Market was closing at the peak of its success.


During the process of the property sale, Larry and Scott developed Colony’s Quality Meats, a streamlined and very unique transformation of Colony Market. Opening December 13th 2005, (the anniversary date of Frank’s original Colony Market opening date in 1962) Colony’s Quality Meats offers nearly 100 feet of full service premium meat and deli counter. Colony’s Quality Meats provides the largest variety of products, and highest service levels for custom retail meat cutting in the region, as well as the largest selection and highest quality seafood and natural poultry in Genesee County. Colony’s Quality Meats is also proud to feature Boar’s Head Premium deli meats and cheeses, along with Zingerman Bakehouse’s artisan breads and pastries. Colony boasts the best and biggest gourmet sandwiches and deli trays in the area. Colony also features a wide variety of produce, with many items being sourced from local growers, as well as, many specialty wine and grocery items from around the world. With the overwhelming support and popularity of the new Colony’s Quality Meats, Larry and Scott knew that this would be the format that would showcase the superior service and quality that everyone had grown to love with Colony and the Smith Family.
